Writer’s Block: God’s Blessing?
by D.L. Kim

It starts to happen again. Your creative mind is the equivalent to a piece of blank paper. The characters and ideas are malnourished because they haven’t received supplement from you. Worst of all, it seems you've lost the will to write. A slight whisper escaped from your lips, cursing the inevitable disease that only certain people are prone to catch called writer’s block.

Writer’s block prevents the writer from creating new ideas and continuing with their current work. Writers of all ages experience writer's block at least once in their lifetime . Despite what type of genre you write (e.g. novels, plays, articles), avoiding the writer’s block is impossible.

Sadly, many writers consider writer's block as a hideous disease. However, a Christian writer should consider writer's block as a blessing from God! Writer’s block as a blessing? Has the author of this article gone mad? No, writer’s block serves many purposes for the Christian writer. Here are three functions of writer’s block.

1. God will stop your writing process like a police officer.
He would ask, “You have been going 50wpm(words per minute). Why are you in such a rush?” This will allow you to make sure your heart is on the right purpose. Also, this is a moment to ask yourself “Am I satisfied with what I’m writing?”

2. When the writer’s block floods in, this is a moment to let God’s creativity and love to come in.
Don’t struggle against the current by yourself or the flood will overwhelm you, leaving you discouraged. This will test if you write depending on God or depending on your own abilities.

3. Got a bad case of writer’s block?
Spend this moment with God through prayer, praise, and reading your  Bible. Don’t worry about “losing valuable writing time.” Maybe God has something important to tell you that could benefit your spiritual walk and/or writing journey.

What do you think about the writer’s block now? It isn’t really big and bad as many writers consider it. A perceived hindrance to reach to your readers is a stepping-stone in your writing life.
