Book Review: Grab a Broom, Lord: There's Dust

The Perfectionist in You
It's tough enough being a Christian and plagued by perfectionism. But if you're a writer, too, then it only gets worse! As a Christian, you want to do the right thing and fail. As a writer, you want to write the right words and fail. It seems like that all you do is fail. What do you do?
Does that sound familiar? Then you may be struggling with perfectionism. If you are, then Karon Phillips Goodman's new book subtitled, The Imperfect Woman's Guide to God's Grace offers you a generous helping of hope. Not a member of the fairer gender? Don't let that stop you from reading Karon's gem about God's grace.
Style and Substance
Initially, I picked up this book and started flipping through the pages for a cursory reading. But I didn't flip the pages for long. I stopped, read, and then dove head and heart first into the beautiful depths of this book. I was captivated by Karon's ability to handle scripture and make it come alive with page after page of practical application. I've never read Karon's books before this one but I'm impressed with her clear writing and and concise style.
Karon arranged this book so at the end of every chapter there are 4 reflective questions that prompts your response to material in the chapter. Which makes this book a very user-friendly tool for a small group ladies study. As a matter of fact, my wife and her friend want to start meeting once a week to pray, study and share together. And my wife wants to start using this book. You, too, may enjoy this nice portion of grace or maybe even your ladies writers group.
Structure
Anymore, when I read any book I also pay attention to the mechanics of a book. You know, the stuff like the book title, chapter titles, arrangement of the material, progression of thoughts and that kind of thing. Karon is a shining example of how a writer can take one topic, God's grace, and present it in organized, progressive sequences. For example, the book is divided in twelve chapters and three parts with four chapters to each part. Here are the themes of each part: Part 1 "The Attitude of God's Grace"; Part 2 "The Application of God's Grace"; Part 3 "The Appreciation of God's Grace". Nice arrangement, don't you agree? Then each part, like I said, contains 4 delightful chapters.
All of this means that this is an ideal book for individual or small group study especially since it's packed with scripture after scripture to illustrate Karon's clear and simple message of God's grace. In fact, you wouldn't really need a Bible to absorb and enjoy this gentle offering of God's grace through Karon's pen.
Minor Caveat
But I must warn you about one little flaw with this book. It's the cover! It's cartoonish and cutesy and I guess someone's idea of a great marketing tool to attract women readers. To this guy, the cover looks a little silly and frivolous which doesn't reflect Karon Phillips Goodman's elegant handling on the topic of God's grace. Please don't judge this book by its cover. It has depth and quality content that the cover doesn't accurately reflect.
Recommendation
I heartily recommend purchasing Karon's new book Grab a Broom, Lord: There's Dust Everywhere it's modestly priced and in a compact size perfect for a handbag or briefcase. Buy this one, read it, and you'll experience a fresh touch of God's grace while reading a good book by a talented writer.
By the way...this is a great gift book for Christmas for a special friend or family member.
