Christian Romance Novels?
by Sandy Layne

Is there such a thing as a “Christian” romance novel? This is a question I am asked all the time, and the answer is a resounding YES! Recently, I was asked why I write in this particular, and admittedly limited, genre. The biggest and best reason I can come up with is I want to honor the Lord in whatever I write and what I write is...romance.

Who reads these novels?

Women (and even some men!) enjoy reading about relationships. That's the reason romance novels are so popular. People enjoy exploring different personalities, having them meet, work together, struggle, and fall in love to live "happily ever after."

The Bible and Romance

It's been said and written it isn't appropriate for a Christian woman -- especially a married woman! -- to read Christian romance novels. Disagreement leaps to my tongue and fingertips with a passion. A romance novel is a fine story. The Bible has romance, albeit entwined with other themes and times. Has no one read about Jacob and Rachel? Abraham and Sarah? Hosea and Gomer? There are even less savory accounts such as Samson and Delilah. What about the passionate Song of Solomon? It's hard to believe the Lord frowns on romance.

What's the Purpose?

Inspirational romance novels are designed to edify the reader as well as let them explore a building relationship that does or will honor God in its culmination. Authors in this genre sometimes even start with a spiritual theme before they have their characters in place, asking the Lord for guidance in their storytelling. Themes such as forgiveness, honesty, fidelity, and faith are all richly fleshed out in what would be called a "sweet" or "light" romantic tale.

Unashamed and Honoring God

Personally, I write Christian romances because I am not ashamed seen reading them! Prurient interests are not best served in a God-honoring context. I can tell my Sunday School students what I am writing and even show them my books with the knowledge it will build them up, not hurt them.

The Challenge and the Reward

It is a challenge, at times, to weave a true spiritual story into a romance. There has to be progression of an event, progression of the protagonists' relationship, and spiritual growth demonstrated by someone in the course of the tale. It’s a challenge, yes. But, also a great reward in communicating God's love through a well-told story.
That is why I write Christian romance!
